Obituary

Dorothy Donnelly, 95, of Jersey City, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 28, 2018 at Ashbrook Nursing Home in Scotch Plains.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend the Funeral from the Sullivan Funeral Home, 146 East Second Ave., Roselle on Saturday, February 3 at 9:00 am, thence to the Church of St. Joseph the Carpenter, Roselle, where a Funeral Mass will be offered at 10:00 am. Interment will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington. Visiting hours will be on Friday, from 4 - 8 pm.

Dorothy was born to Helen (Czerwinski) and John Wodzanowski in 1922 in downtown Jersey City, the oldest of four children. She was a lifelong resident until relocating to be near her daughters in 2008. She met her husband, Cornelius Donnelly, while at work and they married in August 1951. They raised their family of three daughters in the Greenville section of Jersey City and were parishioners of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church. They were married for thirty years until Neil’s passing in 1981.

Dorothy graduated from Snyder High School in Jersey City in 1941 and attended Drake Secretarial School. She was employed as a Secretary at Standard Cap Corp. in both Jersey City and New York City. Later in life, with her husband, Neil’s encouragement, Dorothy started an “encore” career with the Jersey City Library, starting at the Main Branch, downtown, and eventually moving to the neighborhood Pearsall Branch, a converted church, which was home to reading, story time for children, and much neighborhood socializing with the gregarious “Mrs. D”. She retired at age 72.

Dorothy loved bowling, and was a member of bowling leagues in Jersey City with co-workers and her brothers. She was an avid reader and loved to travel with her husband, and later in life, with friends and family. Dorothy loved the Jersey Shore and vacationed in Ocean Beach Unit 1 with her husband and young family and later continued to enjoy family vacations there with her grandchildren. She enjoyed trips to Cape Cod and Vermont over the years and took many Domenico bus trips with her friends and late brother, John. She enjoyed the Paper Mill Theater, card games and dining out with friends, and her brothers and sister-in-law. Dorothy was generous and friendly and knew everyone in her neighborhood. She exemplified all that was good of the old Jersey City.

Dorothy was predeceased by her husband, Neil, daughter, Maureen Donnelly, sister, Jane Hansen, and brother, John Wodzanowski. She is survived by her daughters, Susan Donnelly and husband Stephen Jung, Janet Donnelly and husband Michael Shields, son-in-law, Joseph O’Halloran, her beloved, “baby’ brother, Leonard Wodzanowski, and five grandchildren, Thomas Shields, Brian Shields, Julia O’Halloran-Keefer, Bridget O’Halloran, and Catherine Jung.

Dorothy leaves behind many smiles and many stories! Stolat!
