Virginia T. Gannon, 91, of Alburtis, Pa, and formerly of Clark, N.J. entered into eternal rest on Sunday, March 10, 2019, surrounded by her devoted family after battling congestive heart failure and pneumonia.

Virginia was feisty and determined. She was a cancer survivor and battled several other illnesses over the years. She was also extremely sweet and kind and was loved almost instantly by anyone who came to know her. She had a great smile and was often told she had beautiful skin and lovely hair, even at 91.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend the Visitation at Walter Johnson Funeral Home, 803 Raritan Rd., Clark, on Friday, March 15, from 4 - 8 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will occur on Saturday, March 16, at 10:00 a.m. at St. John the Apostle Church, Clark. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Westfield.

Mrs. Gannon was born in Irvington, N.J., to Louis and Matilda Marie (Bonert) Tillisch. She lived and raised her family in Clark for 37 years prior to moving to Alburtis, PA, in 1997 to be near her two daughters.

Mrs. Gannon was a graduate of Union High School and the Berkeley School, East Orange, and attended Seton Hall Urban Division, Newark. She worked as a legal secretary for several prestigious law firms before working as a secretary for the Superintendent of Schools in Garwood, N.J.

Virginia was a dedicated and devoted mother to her three children, Elaine, Grace and Jeff and there is nothing she wouldn’t sacrifice for her family. She was a selfless individual with a generous heart who never asked for anything for herself and always reminded others that she was a “depression baby” which is why she was very frugal but also clever and inventive when it came to solving problems. For a pin cushion she repurposed a small candy box and inserted a sewn fabric packet containing cotton. Virginia was also an excellent cook and seamstress who sewed clothes and costumes for the family. She loved to garden and had a green thumb and even in her later years her African violets were always in bloom. Virginia was artistic and won prizes for her paintings.

Virginia was also a very religious and devoted Catholic who was known to say several rosaries each day especially in her later years. She often watched EWTN (Catholic programming) and made sure to watch and pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy at 3 p.m. almost every day. In times of need her family members turned to her to ask her to pray for them and she was happy to pray for each and every one of them.

As a gorgeous bride worthy of a magazine cover, Virginia married John J. Gannon on Valentine’s Day 1953 in Our Lady of Sorrows Church, South Orange. They were married for 32 years until his death in 1985. Sadness struck again with the death of her wonderful son, Jeffrey, in 2018. But her family was inspired by how she continued on and still could smile and have the twinkle in her eye when she attended family gatherings, especially the recent wedding of her grandson, Jack.

Mrs. Gannon is survived by her daughters Elaine Gannon and her husband Jim Solomon, and Grace Gannon and her husband Jerome Licini; her daughter in law Lisa (Cimbalista) Gannon; her five grandchildren, Dr. James P. Solomon and his wife Stephanie, Jack Solomon and his husband Michael Lytle, Andrew Licini, Jessica Gannon and Jennifer Gannon; and her nephew Robert Petersak. Mrs. Gannon was predeceased by her husband, John J. Gannon, her son, Jeffrey John Gannon and her sister, Frances Tillisch Petersak.
