Michael Girgus

Born in Elizabeth, New Jersey
Resided in Clark, New Jersey

Michael Girgus, 95, of Clark, entered into eternal life with his Lord on January 15, 2018. He was surrounded by his loving family.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral from the Walter Johnson Funeral Home, 803 Raritan Road, Clark, on Friday, January 19 at 9:00 am and then to Osceola Presbyterian Church, Clark, where a Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 am. Interment will follow in Graceland Memorial Park, Kenilworth. Visiting hours will be on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9.

Michael was born on Sept 2, 1922 in Elizabeth to Nickolas and Ksenia Girgus, where he spent his childhood and teenage years excelling in organized sports; his best sports being baseball and basketball. Growing up in the port section of Elizabeth he learned to swim in the Arthur Kill and would swim from the NJ side to Staten Island then back.

Michael was employed by Singers in Elizabeth until he enlisted in the Navy during World War II. He proudly served with the 6th Battalion Seabees for more than 3 years. He was in the Pacific theater and saw action at Guadalcanal, the Russell Islands, and Bougainville. He was awarded various medals, ribbons, commendations, and citations. After his service he returned to Singers and held various positions to include lath operator, and mechanic. In the early 1960's he switched professions and became a Union County Sheriff's officer advancing to the rank of sergeant and retiring in 1987.

Michael attended the regional WWII Seabee reunions throughout his life until they ceased having them around 2005. He also regularly attended all the Jefferson High School Reunions until they also ceased after the 65th reunion.

Michael met his beloved wife, Rhoda Goren, in 1947 and they were married in 1951 and remained happily married for 57 years until her passing in 2009. Throughout the years they enjoyed their extensive travels through the US and Europe. They also enjoyed visiting historic homes and museums, attending theater, and working in their garden. Michael was an active reader and especially enjoyed history and current events. Listening to music was also a great source of enjoyment for him.

Michael and Rhoda bought a home in Clark in 1960 and spent the remainder of their lives there. That home was where they raised their three daughters and was a focal point for entertainment for their extended family.

Michael was a devoted husband and father making family his first priority. His love and devotion for family continued as his family expanded to include 4 grandchildren and eventually 9 great grandchildren. His involvement in their lives had been continuous even in his later years. Within the past 5 years he has taken family trips to Disneyworld twice, and cruises to the Bahamas and Bermuda with all the great grandchildren, grandchildren and their spouses, and daughters. Other trips that he took during this period included trips to Iceland, California, and Texas. Extended family outing events this year included Atlantic City, Washington DC, Hershey Park, Great Adventure, zoos, NYC, theater, and movies.

Michael was also a devout Christian and attended the East Baptist/Raritan Road Baptist church from the time he was a little boy. He served as a Deacon and Trustee for more than 45 years. He has recently been attending Osceola Presbyterian Church in Clark. Because of his strong Christian beliefs in which the deceased enjoy the presence of God and loved ones for eternity in Heaven, Michael very much looked forward to that day when he would be reunited with his deceased parents, brothers and sisters, and beloved wife. He was the middle child of 11 and was the final surviving sibling in his family. This heavenly reunion would be 50+ years in the making.

Michael is survived by his three loving daughters - Ms. Linda Heinsohn and her husband Charles, Mrs. Donna Stinner, and Ms. Barbara Girgus; his four cherished grandchildren - Rachelle McCann and her husband William, Michael Opperman, Mark Miller and his wife Kira, and Alysha Baldwin and her husband Jeffrey and his nine treasured great grandchildren - Billy, CJ, Shaelyn, Aviana, Raiden, Vanessa, Hudson, Mason, and Brianna. In addition he is survived by 3 sisters-in-law, one brother-in-law and multiple nieces and nephews. He leaves them all with fond memories.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in his memory to St. Jude Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-995
