William J. Anthes, 93, of Roselle, passed away on June 27, 2018.

Born in Elizabeth, he lived 65 years in Roselle. After graduating high school, Bill was drafted into the Army Air Corps, and served proudly as a B-17 pilot for the 8th Air Force during World War II.

Upon his return home, he earned his degree from Newark College of Engineering, and worked as a mechanical engineer for Exxon at the Bayway refinery. He coached in the St. Joseph’s Boys’ League, and was active in the Exxon Annuitants.

Bill served as a role model to all who knew him, providing an example of the power of positivity, of patience, of selflessness and, most of all, of faith and family. He exhibited these throughout his life, whether it was watching neighborhood children wear bald spots in his lawn while playing, dutifully nursing his spouse through an illness, or attending his grandchildren’s many athletic events, plays and recitals. He lived without complaint, and asked for nothing in return.

To the end, he remained a voracious reader of books and news, capable of having a conversation on any topic. He embraced the chance to learn something new. He valued his self-reliance, driving himself on long road trips well into his 90s. He would joke that as a World War II pilot, he could do anything. And, usually, he was right.

He found joy in simple things: a trip to Kings supermarket, a walk in Warinanco Park, a tape of his favorite swing music. He rarely talked or thought about himself, preferring to focus on others. Even when faced with concerns of his own, he’d put others first.

Son of the late John Anthes and Frances Erle, brother of the late Jack and Edward Anthes, and devoted, loving husband of the late Elnora Henry, Bill’s legacy continues with his surviving family, each of whom brings a piece of him with them. Carrying his lessons on are his four children: William (and wife Enid) Anthes, of Liverpool, N.Y.; John (and wife Mary) Anthes, of Cranford; Patricia (and husband Chris) Salmi, of Roselle; and Robert (and wife Margaret) Anthes, of Hamilton.

He is Pop Pop to 10 grandchildren: Hannah Anthes; John, Bill (and wife Karianne) and Tom Anthes; Matt (and wife Kristin), Ellen (and husband Joshua) and Elizabeth Salmi; Rob (and wife Norine), Scott and Courtney Anthes, as well as six great-grandchildren. They have been inspired by him in many ways, whether through military service, a mind for science and engineering, a passion for learning and knowledge, a love of family, or a deep, abiding faith.

Relatives and friends are invited to calling hours 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, July 1 at Sullivan Funeral Home, 146 E. 2nd Avenue, Roselle. The Funeral begins Monday, at 9 the Funeral Home, thence to the Church of St. Joseph the Carpenter, 160 E. 3th Avenue, Roselle, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at St. Gertrude Cemetery.
