Obituary

John “Jack” O’Connor, 75, of Garwood, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, September 12, 2018.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend the Funeral from the Walter Johnson Funeral Home, 803 Raritan Rd., Clark, on Wednesday, September 19 at 8:45 am, thence to St. Agnes Church, Clark, where a Funeral Mass will be offered at 9:45 am. Interment will follow in St. Gertrude Cemetery, Colonia. Visiting hours will be on Tuesday from 4 - 8 pm.

John was born and raised in Newark, NJ, where he met and married his wife Anastasia “Nancy” Maneri. Jack and Nancy raised their son, Kevin, in Newark before moving to Cranford, Franklin Park, and finally settling in Garwood, NJ to be closer to their son, their daughter in law Maria, and 3 grandchildren, Kristen, Taylor and Matthew. Nothing was more important to Jack than spending time with his wife, his son, and his grandchildren. He spent many years being the biggest fan for his grandchildren, attending basketball, baseball, and lacrosse games for his grandson and softball games and recitals for his granddaughters.

Jack served in the United States Air Force from 1961-1969, during the Vietnam War and later in Korea. His primary duties included civil engineering, drafting and surveying flight lines.

Upon leaving the military, Jack was able to take advantage of the GI Bill, and graduated from NJIT, with an associates degree in Engineering.

Jack was employed at Exxon Mobil, first as a contractor and later as an employee for almost 28 years in the CADD division. Jack traveled on behalf of the company to many locations, including Shanghai, China, Houston, Texas and Baton Rouge, Louisiana for relocations services. Jack retired in 2013.

Jack formed long term friendships with his Exxon co-workers and enjoyed playing golf, and making wine with them. Jack was an avid traveler and was proud to have served his country.

Jack was an active member of St Agnes Church, where he served as a Eucharistic Minister at mass for many years.

Jack is survived by his wife of 54 years, Nancy, his son Kevin, his daughter-in-law Maria, his grandchildren, Kristen, Taylor and Matthew, his two brothers Thomas and William, and many loving nieces, nephews and other family members.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting a donation be made in Jack’s name to the Ronald McDonald House of Central & Northern New Jersey, Inc., 131 Bath Ave., Long Branch, NJ 07740.
