Obituary

Margaret Clare Phelan, known to her friends and family as Peggy, died peacefully at home on Tuesday, November 27, 2018 in the company of her eldest daughter, Mary Ellen, and her caretaker, Nana.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to celebrate Peggy's long and full life at the Visitation at the Walter Johnson Funeral Home, 803 Raritan Rd., Clark, on Friday, November 30 from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. The Funeral will begin on Saturday, December 1 at 8:45 am at the Funeral Home, thence to St. Agnes Church, Clark where a Funeral Mass will be offered at 9:45 am, and the burial will follow at St. Gertrude Cemetery, Colonia.

Peggy's rich life is part of a larger story of the Irish immigrant experience. She was born in Astoria, Queens to parents who had immigrated from Ireland. She grew up in Queens, where she met and married her husband, Jim, himself the child of Irish immigrants. They moved to Kings Park in Suffolk County, Long Island in 1955 and then to Clark in 1964.

A model of resilience and optimism, Peggy always put faith and family first. Nearing the end, she told Mary Ellen, "I've had a great life, and I have no regrets." Peggy and Jim raised seven children, all born between 1949 and 1962, and Peggy was a beloved grandmother to seventeen and beloved great-grandmother to seven. A daily communicant, she was well-known as an active participant in the life of St. Agnes Church.

She is pre-deceased by one child, Bernadette (at birth) and her husband Jim (1974) as well as by her five siblings. She is survived by her seven children, Joe, Jim, Mary Ellen, Betsy, Terry, Peggy, Gerard and by her daughters-in-law, Lynne O'Connor Phelan (wife of Joe) and Elizabeth Menaghan (wife of Jim), and her sons-in-law, John Griff (husband of Mary Ellen). Paul Smith (husband of Betsy), and Roger Bogsted (husband of Terry), as well as by those grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

After Jim's death in 1974, Peggy completed her B.A. and then went on to receive her M.A. from Kean College. These achievements reflect Jim and Peggy's own preaching to their children about the importance of education. Among other jobs, she worked as an elementary school teacher at St. Agnes and in the Elizabeth public school system.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Peggy's memory to St. Agnes Church, 332 Madison Hill Avenue, Clark, NJ 07066.
