Obituary

George Edward Argast, 86, of Rahway, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, June 27, 2019 surrounded by his loving family.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend the Visitation at the Walter Johnson Funeral Home, 803 Raritan Rd., Clark, on Monday, July 1from 4 - 8 pm. The Funeral will begin on Tuesday at 8:30 am at the Funeral Home, thence to St. John Vianney Church, Colonia where a Funeral Mass will be offered at 9:30 am. Entombment will follow in Hollywood Memorial Park in Union.

George was born in Newark to George and Natalie (Korytko) Argast. He proudly served his country in the Navy during the Korean War and was the recipient of a Purple Heart. He graduated as a Registered Nurse from Martland Hospital in Newark, he received his BA from Rutgers University and his Master’s in Business from Wagner College in Staten Island. He later graduated from Seton Hall University School of Graduate Medical Education with a Master’s of Science Physician Assistant. He lived in Irvington and then Keansburg, prior to moving to Rahway 54 years ago.

George began his career as a Registered Nurse at Alexian Brothers Hospital and then at St. Elizabeth Hospital. He next became the Assistant Director of Nursing at Rahway Hospital and later the Assistant Administrative Director. He followed that as a Chief Operating Officer at JFK Medical Center for 8 years and most recently served as a Physician Assistant for the last 18 years.

George was a member and Past President of the Kiwanis Club of Rahway, a member of the Italian American Club of Plainfield and a Board member of the Rahway Housing Authority. He was the recipient of the “Good Neighbor Award” for community service and a life Fellow of American College Health Care Executives. He was also a Fellow of the American Association of Surgical Physician Assistants and a Fellow of the American Academy of Physician Assistants. He was a member of the New Jersey Society of Physician Assistants and a Past President of Physician Assistant Advisory Committee of the New Jersey Board of Medical Examiners.

George was predeceased by his parents George and Natalie, his daughter Jacqueline Kelly and his brother William Argast. He is survived by his wife of 44 years Gerrie (O’Casey) Argast; his devoted son Edward Argast and his wife Jane; his cherished grandchildren, Kristina Petti, Alyse Petti, Michael Kelly, Deirdre Argast, Daniel Argast and his wife Lisa, Charles Argast, Patrick Argast and Jack Argast; his great grandchildren, Colton Petti and Ronald Argast; his dear sister Mary Gottlieb and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and good friends.
