Richard Newman, formerly of Clark & Point Pleasant, died on September 2, 2019, at age 90, in Brandywine Senior Living, Toms River, NJ.

Born at home in South Orange, NJ to Dr. Jules & Mildred (Loeser) Newman on August 27, 1929, he graduated from Columbia High School in 1947, Columbia University in 1951 and Tufts University Medical College in 1955. He was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American College of Angiology and Diplomat of the American Board of Surgery and the National Board of Medical Examiners. Following the completion of his surgical residency, he opened his surgical practice in Rahway, NJ and where he was an attending surgeon at Rahway Hospital, until his retirement in 1996.

During his tenure at Rahway Hospital he served as Medical Staff President and twice as Chief of Surgery. He was published several times for his research in abdominal wall closure and hernia repair techniques. He was the Medical Advisor for multiple area Rescue Squads, including Clark and Rahway, Medical Instructor, Union County Police Academy and Police Surgeon for the Rahway and Clark Police Departments. He was most proud of the public service awards that he received from those organizations. He was an active member of the Medical Society of NJ and the Union County Medical Society where he served as Chairman of the Judicial Committee.

Following his first retirement, he embarked on a career as Medical Director for Horizon BCBS, Newark, during which he commuted by train from Point Pleasant, until 2012. Never satisfied in retirement, he began his final career as a driver with Open MRI of Wall, until his final retirement, at age 85, in 2014.

An avid fisherman and true conservationist, he was a champion of the NJ marine environment through his active participation with American Littoral Society’s, tag and release program for game fish and his 1977 appointment, by Governor Brendan Byrne, to the NJ Marine Fisheries Advisory Committee. His lifelong love of animals, and the Florida Keys, led him to support the efforts of two non-profit animal rescue organizations, The Dolphin Research Center and Turtle Hospital, for more than 30 years. His friendship with the local Terry Lou Zoo owners provided him with many exotic animal adventures, including traveling with a lion in his station wagon and hand-raising endangered jaguar kittens, with his wife Ruth, in their Clark home. Always an eager adventurer, he and Ruth traveled on archaeologic expeditions to Guatemala, fun excursions throughout Europe and business and educational trips all around the United States.

Predeceased by his wife of 43 years, Ruth, in 2012, and step-son, Scott Stebbins (Gina), in 2011, he is survived by his two children, Wendy Soldini (Tom), of Edgartown, MA, Dan Newman (Maureen) of Cambridge, MA, two step-children, Susan Stebbins (George) of Rahway, NJ and David Stebbins (Debby) of Clark, NJ. Also survived by three grandchildren, nine step-grandchildren, eight step-greatgrandchildren and dear friend Marilyn Daley.

Known for his trademark cowboy hat and boots, he will be remembered for his forthright personality, superb medical skills, cheerful wit and many incredible stories of adventure. He was a fascinating person, whose interests and accomplishments could never be fully captured here, with a kind heart and a vigorous mind. He is missed by those who love him.
